The Scottish Prison Service (SPS) was selected to join the Carbon Trust’s Public Sector Carbon Management Programme in 2009/2010. CEC was contracted to develop the Carbon Management Plan. SPS is a large organisation and is ambitious in seeking carbon emissions reductions in all of its prisons, headquarters, Prison College and Stores. Working in partnership with the private sector prisons and prisoner transfer provider (Reliance), the full carbon footprint of the SPS was established, including the construction and demolition of prisons that are being refurbished and new build, such as Low Moss Prison in Bishopbriggs. CEC staff supported a cross organisation carbon reduction planning workshop, where representatives of each of the 16 prisons, headquarters, stores and college. The project established over 70 carbon reduction projects, which will achieve a 20% relative reduction in emissions over a 5 year period and saving the organisation around £7.7 million. The CMP brings an additional focus to the SPS’s already established policy commitment to sustainability.
Dumfries and Galloway Council was selected to join the Carbon Trust’s Public Sector Carbon Management Programme in 2008/2009. CEC was contracted to undertake a carbon emissions audit and to establish the council’s carbon baseline from the delivery of the council’s services. This has enabled the council to set realistic targets to reduce emissions. The CMP developed established a minimum reduction of 20% and savings of around £1.66 million. CEC staff facilitated the development of the CMP through running a series of workshops with the sustainability team at the council, developing carbon and finance projection models and preparing the Carbon Management Plan report for the council. The CMP was agreed by the Council in May 2009.
Bus company, Stagecoach Scotland is committed to providing a “carbon neutral” transport service for its customers as part of an environmental strategy to help tackle climate change by reducing the carbon footprint of both the company and its customers. CEC provided support to verify carbon emissions and calculate average carbon emissions saved per Stagecoach journey on its Edinburgh-Fife routes. Using the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s Greenhouse Gas emissions methodology, CEC calculated the emissions produced by the range of different bus types and destinations and included the information required for the company to undertake an offsetting agreement with the climate charity “Global Trees”.
