Volunteering can be a great way to develop the skills and experience needed to help you to secure a graduate job or place on a postgraduate programme when you leave University. The following Psychology and Social Sciences graduates took part in voluntary work through the Voluntary Work & Mentoring Scheme while they were studying at Caledonian and have gone on to paid jobs in the voluntary or public sectors or to MSc Programmes in applied Psychology. Read on to find out how they did it…
Angela is a BSc Psychology graduate who is currently undertaking an MSc in Forensic Psychology here at GCU. Throughout her time on her undergraduate degree, Angela undertook various volunteering roles which she believes helped her to secure her place on the programme.
Claire is a BSc Psychology graduate who is currently working as a Special Needs Pupil Support Assistant in an Autism Unit and with mainstream pupils. During her time as an undergraduate, Claire volunteered with several organisations and believes this really helped her to secure her current post.
Emma is a BSc Psychology graduate who is currently undertaking an MSc in Forensic Psychology here at GCU. Throughout her time on her undergraduate degree, Emma volunteered with Witness Service to gain the skills and experience needed to secure a place on the competitive postgraduate Programme.
Katie is a BA Social Sciences graduate who started volunteering with the Carers Information and Support Line when she was in the third year of her studies. Katie was quickly taken on as a paid, part time member of staff within the organisation while she was still a student and she still works for them now that she has graduated.
Laura is a BSc Psychology graduate who volunteered extensively with various organisations throughout her time as an undergraduate student. Laura is currently Acting Social Programmes Manager of Scotland for the National Autistic Society and believes volunteering was crucial to securing this graduate job.
