Academic Writing and Reading

Welcome to the Learning Development Centre writing pages.

On the following pages we provide advice on academic writing, show you examples of academic texts and provide some exercises for you to practise. We will gradually add more materials to these pages, so please come back to have a look at our progress.

The pages are divided into four sections:

1. The Process of Writing

In this section we guide you through the process of preparing an assignment, from decoding the question to editing and proof-reading.

2. Types of Coursework

Here we explain specific types of academic assignments, such as essays, reports, reflective writing or literature review.

3. Subject Specific Materials

Different subjects use slightly different conventions in their texts. On these pages we present examples of different academic texts from a range of different subjects.

4. Language in Writing

Writing in an academic style is often very different from speaking. These pages are there to help you become fluent in this 'new language', whether you are a native speaker of English or use English as a second language.
