The centre was established in August 2003 at Glasgow Caledonian University to coordinate work in different areas of the university and bring research closer to the community. This Centre will focus attention on the factors that determine the indoor environment (primarily in buildings but also including transportation) and the consequent affect on the health of the occupants.
The Centre staff have expertise in the following areas:
Alongside expert witness services including toxicology and drug analysis, fire accelerant analysis and gunshot residue testing, CAMAS is developing cutting edge analytical and microscopy services which can help prevent pollution and find biomarkers of human neurological diseases to aid in diagnosis and subsequent therapies - one of the most pressing goals of modern medicine. CAMAS brings together extensive equipment capabilities and in-house scientific expertise from within the School to offer a range of consultancy and research services to external companies and organisations. State-of-the art microscopy and imaging instruments include a Laser Scanning Confocal Microscope; Atomic Force Microscope with STM capability; a Scanning Electron Microscope with EDX; a Transmission Electron Microscope and several Fluorescence Spectrometers. Expert analytical chemistry and forensic testing services include Gas-Liquid Chromatography – Flame Ionization Detector; High Performance Liquid Chromatography with Diode-Array Detection; Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry; and Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry. Using this equipment, CAMAS can offer clients a few hours’ testing analysis to longer term research or analytical collaborations. Clients have included SEPA, Scottish Water, oil sector companies, pharmaceutical, environmental and forensic sector organisations.
