CU There
Current Projects
Second Life is a little over a year after it's introduction already being utilised in a remarkable number and variety of projects, by a wide range of teaching departments at GCU.
A selection of these include:
- The School of Engineering and Computing where complex algorithms (e.g. the flocking behaviour of birds) are visualized using Second Life, to improve understanding. The PhD students who have created the project were challenged to use Second Life to simplify an area of their studies that they themselves found challenging.

- The School of Nursery, Midwifery and Community Health has created a virtual clinical skills lab in Second Life where student nurses learn about decision making processes, taking place in an exact replica of the clinical skills lab (3 NHS hospital wards) on GCU’s campus, assisted by a combination of real-time tutors and Artificial Intelligence (AIML) bots running from webservers with remote procedure calls..

- The School of Health and Social Care is utilizing Second Life as a platform for students to access support from an Academic Development Tutor. This lowers the threshold to ask for help, while allowing for an anonymous but still relatively personal 'face to face' meeting in a separate, private area. .

- The same department has also built and scripted a virtual replica of the University’s single x-ray machine, giving students a the possibility to familiarize themselves with the machine and the settings before accessing the 'real world' machine, providing a level of access to a learning resource that it would be impossible to realize in the real world..

- i-CAMPPUS (internet College Articulation and Mentoring Project for Prospective University Students) where student mentors use Second Life to interact with first year (and even prospective) students, to explain about the schools, the services, the things you need to know when first arriving. This is especially aimed at international students..
