The Centre was established in 2005 as a collaborative venture between historians at Glasgow Caledonian and Strathclyde Universities who had identified common research interests in the fields of the history of medicine and of health and healthcare.
In July 2008 the Centre attracted funding from the Wellcome Trust in the form of an Enhancement Award, which supports a range of research activities over a five year period, including conferences, workshops, seminar series, visiting scholars, and public engagement ventures.
The two universities jointly provide an , which is also supported by the Wellcome Trust, and forms part of a growing postgraduate body.
