Hot Glasgow fashion for "Harajuku girls"

Hot Glasgow fashion for Harajuku girlsJapan’s style-conscious Harajuku Girls, made famous by pop star Gwen Stefani, were one inspiration for fourth-year fashion students from Glasgow Caledonian University to create an exciting new range of clothing. The students combined funky Japanese chic with traditional British ideas like the London Underground, "horse blankets" and afternoon tea.

The undergraduates have teamed up with traditional Scottish clothing manufacturers, Glengarnock Garments, to put together the unusual collection of outfits. The company already enjoy success in Japan with their country casual clothing range including breeks, waistcoats and flat caps in tartan and tweed but have turned to Glasgow Caledonian’s innovative thinking Fashion Business students to help take their look in a new direction.

Robert Carey Production Director of Glengarnock Garments said:

"The variation of designs and ideas presented were of the highest quality and the creativity of the students has proven to be exceptional. Glengarnock can now offer a great number of new and unique style ideas our Japanese clients. We are very hopeful that one or more of these designs will be incorporated into an order for Spring/Summer 2006."

The young designers will be showing off their work on the catwalk at the Glengarnock sponsored end of year show, taking place this Friday, 17th June 2005. They will be joined by third year students, who are given a free rein to take their ideas in any direction they chose. Undergraduate Gemma Connolly used the unusual combination of ballet, punk and knitting as inspiration for her "Peaches & Cream Collection". Other creations were stimulated by visions of straitjackets and padded cells, childhood summer holidays and facial expressions.

The fashion show outfits will go on display at the university as part of the university’s new "Caledonian Creates" initiative, designed to link up thinking between the creative industries within the university and across Scotland.
