Speaker: Mel Young, BIG Issue magazine and Homeless World Cup founder
Masterclass title: A Journey on a Mountain Range with a Ball (Social Entrepreneurship in the Modern World)
Time/Date: February 16 2010
Mel, whose talk is entitled A Journey on a Mountain Range with a Ball (Social Entrepreneurship in the Modern World) will discuss his experiences in tackling the homeless issue and how this led to the creation of the Big Issue and the Homeless World Cup.
GCU's latest guest speaker launched the Big Issue magazine in Scotland with Trisha Hughes in 1993, at a time when homelessness was a serious problem in Scotland and the UK. The Big Issue enables homeless people to help themselves and make a huge difference to their lives.
In 2003, Mel helped launch the Homeless World Cup, recognizing that the language of football is universal. This has since grown to over 56 competing nations, securing corporate sponsorship from Nike and UEFA. Over 77% of players who compete in the Homeless World Cup go on to find a home, come off drugs and alcohol, get into education, jobs and training and repair relationships with friends and family.
Mel also helped set up the International Network of Street papers (INSP), of which he is currently president. He is Editor-in-Chief of New Consumer magazine, co-founder of Senscot and the Social Entrepreneurs Network Scotland. In 2002 he was one of 40 worldwide social entrepreneurs recognized as outstanding by the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship.
