How did you first hear about the Careers Service?
I first heard about the Careers Service when I was a student in University but I never made use of it until I had left uni and was looking for a job. We had a session in one of our classes in 4th year telling us all about its facilities. I kept the information as I knew it would come in useful.
What did the Careers Advisers help you with?
I first had an appointment to help me with my application forms. This was very helpful as I didn’t understand why I wasn’t getting any interviews. As soon as I adjusted my forms, I started to get interviews frequently. I then made another couple of appointments for mock interviews. These were very helpful as the career advisor had prepared a mock interview in advance in relation to my area of work. I had never had an interview before so this was great preparation.
Were you pleased with the help?
I was delighted with the help I got. The careers advisers were very friendly and helpful. It was clear they had put a lot of time and effort into preparing for my appointment. I knew the practice interviews were helpful because I got a job after my 2nd appointment.
What advice would you give for any other students who are looking for work after they graduate or during their studies?
I would say never give up looking. It has taken me a year after I graduated to get a job but my employers were impressed to see that I was still enthusiastic and constantly applying for jobs.
I think the Careers Service is worth using and I’ve definitely benefited from the advisers’ help. I’ve recommended it to my friends who are still looking for work.
