“I believe the key to securing work after University is by being prepared and taking a pro active approach - continually practising psychometric tests, interview technique, having a professional CV and actively seeking job opportunities. I regularly used the Careers Service website to help provide tips for completing applications and preparing for job interviews.”"Lisa Graham, Standard Life
What job are you doing now and what does it involve?
I graduated in 2009 and secured a graduate job with Standard Life where I am currently studying towards a professional accountancy qualification (ACCA) and gaining the necessary experience to qualify as an accountant.
How did you get your job?
I applied for my job through Standard Life's graduate website which initially involved the completion of an online application. This was followed by graduate testing and several interviews.
Did you use any of the services offered by the Careers Service?
I regularly used the Careers Service website to help provide tips for completing applications and preparing for job interviews and was satisfied with the information provided.
What advice would you give for any other students who are looking for work after they graduate or during their studies?
I think it’s important to actively seek degree related work experience whilst at University - this can help to set you apart from other candidates whilst applying for jobs. I would also advise students to spend time putting together a CV and covering letter which are professional and tailored to meet the needs of the jobs which are being applied for.
Applying for jobs in advance of the closing date is also essential. I believe the key to securing work after University is by being prepared and taking a pro active approach - continually practising psychometric tests, interview technique, having a professional CV and actively seeking job opportunities.
