Health and Life Sciences Facilities
The Eye Clinic trains Optometrists, Dispensing Opticians and Orthoptists – the only institution in the UK to do so. GCU has the facilities for specialised testing that is otherwise available only in hospitals. During teaching semesters patients are examined by students under the direct supervision of experienced and qualified clinical staff. In addition the Clinical Optometrist provides a full range of eye examination services throughout the year.
Inter-professional Clinical Simulation Centre
Our state of the art Clinical Simulation Laboratory is used to develop the clinical skills of nurses and ambulance staff. It can also be used to test and develop new medical procedures and assessment techniques. The ward environment includes a nurses’ station and intensive care suite, while audio-visual recorders can monitor proceedings in real time and students can learn by watching recordings of their techniques.
GCU has unveiled a state-of-the-art simulated surgical theatre to coincide with the launch of a degree course to train operating room specialists. The lab contains a scrub sink, operating table and a range of anaesthetic and surgical equipment, some of which has been donated by medical suppliers. GCU has also taken delivery of an anaesthetic machine and a high tech manikin, which can be programmed by the lecturing team to challenge students in a variety of everyday scenarios and assess their performance in situations where the patient’s condition starts to deteriorate.
Human Performance Laboratories
State-of-the-art human performance laboratories with capability to measure functional performance and activities of living in controlled and free-living conditions, including 3-D motion capture, ultrasound techniques, force and pressure analysis, muscle function and strength, metabolic and physical activity monitoring. Additionally, we have capacity for computer-aided design and manufacture (rapid prototyping) of novel orthotic devices.
Biological and Biomedical Sciences Analysis
Laboratory facilities offering access to the latest technology in DNA sequencing. Capacity for cell and molecular biology to investigate a number of common diseases and toxic responses to drug and other xenobiotics. Additionally, there is capacity to develop zebra-fish models of human disease condition and as screening tools for potential therapeutic agents.
GCU offers psychophysiology and development laboratories with digital recording facilities and observation rooms.
Food Sciences Lab
World class expertise in the microbiology, safety, chemistry and structure of food at Glasgow Caledonian University is regularly called on by corporate and public sector organisations. GCU is the only university in the UK to have a United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) accredited laboratory. Specialist equipment includes dedicated instrumentation which allows for the rapid detection and classification of bacteria relevant to food safety. In addition to consultancy and research work, the department provides professional courses in food safety for companies leading to certification from the Royal Environmental Health Institute of Scotland (REHIS).
Business, Media and Fashion Facilities
Equipped with contemporary, industrial machinery used for the design and production of fashion items, the Fashion Factory includes an industry-standard computer-aided design (CAD) system for fashion and textile design, pattern making and retail merchandising. From guidance on design management to creating fashion illustrations, the university’s fashion business team is equipped with the facilities and know-how to solve any problem. A Lectra CAD suite can be provided to businesses for design, pattern development and visual merchandising.
Our dedicated studio facilities for video and audio production offer training using up-to-date digital equipment. Industry-standard facilities including our new, purpose-built multimedia newsroom to produce television and radio news packages.

Engineering and Built Environment Facilities
We are using virtual prototypes in unique healthcare and automotive applications using a unique laboratory to explore imaginative and novel uses of advanced 3D digital visualisation and interaction technologies.
The eMotion Laboratory is a unique facility which examines players’ physiological measures of involvement with games. Monitoring pupil dilation, body movement and game pad techniques the lab is totally unobtrusive, with experiments taking place in a living-room style setting.
Caledonian ICT Academy offers a wide range of accredited IT training courses and is an accredited training academy and testing centre for a number of major vendors, including Cisco Systems, Microsoft, Adobe, Oracle and Sun.
The unique mercury intrusion porosimeter allows the accurate measurement of microstructural characteristics (pore size, structure and distribution) of porous materials. These properties impact on aspects of performance such as moisture movement, heat transfer and durability. The equipment can also be used to measure compressibility of non-porous materials such as insulation materials.
Particle Imaging Velocimetry, with Laser Induced Fluoresence
This equipment allows the measurement accurately and non-invasively fluid flows and temperature fields within fluid flows (air, water and others). Current research applications include measurement of heat transfer and air flows in solar collectors and cavity walls.
GCU’s Environmental Chambers help place the university at the forefront of UK research into the performance of building materials and diagnostic methods of testing material failure. The twin environmental chamber allows materials, up to 2.5 metres square, to be placed in simulated conditions encompassing every type of weather our climate can produce.
This equipment allows the rapid and precise determination of the thermal conductivity of materials ranging from insulation to dense concrete. This is the essential parameter that affects the energy efficiency of buildings. The equipment is used both in research and development of advanced materials and for consultancy work.
X-ray Absorption Equipment
The X-ray absorption apparatus at GCU enables high resolution moisture content measurements under transient conditions, e.g. the wetting and drying behaviour of sandstone. The moisture transport properties derived from these investigations can be used in simulation models for predicting moisture movement at material interfaces and other important macroscopic features.
Vapour Permeability Testing
The water vapour transmission rates of building products such as vapour permeable membranes can be measured precisely using a Gintronic GraviTest Model 6300.
Process Materials Testing
GCU houses one of the few independent research facilities for pneumatic conveying and solids handling worldwide. Industrial scale pneumatic conveying systems are used for a wide range of consultancy and contract research and development.
Caledonian Advanced Microscopy and Analytical Services (CAMAS)
CAMAS brings together extensive equipment capabilities and in-house scientific expertise to offer a range of consultancy and research services to external companies and organisations. State-of-the art microscopy and imaging instruments include a Laser Scanning Confocal Microscope; Atomic Force Microscope with STM capability; a Scanning Electron Microscope with EDX; a Transmission Electron Microscope and several Fluorescence Spectrometers. Alongside expert witness services including toxicology and drug analysis, fire accelerant analysis and gunshot residue testing, CAMAS is developing cutting edge analytical and microscopy services which can help prevent pollution and find biomarkers of human neurological diseases to aid in diagnosis and subsequent therapies - one of the most pressing goals of modern medicine. Expert analytical chemistry and forensic testing services include Gas-Liquid Chromatography – Flame Ionization Detector; High Performance Liquid Chromatography with Diode-Array Detection; Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry; and Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry. Clients have included SEPA, Scottish Water, oil sector companies, pharmaceutical, environmental and forensic sector organisations.
