“Law Shaping Technology; Technology Shaping the Law”

Security and privacy of our personal information is becoming a central theme with the rise in social networking technologies and user generated content.  Have sites such as Facebook and YouTube responded in a timely and effective manner to safeguard our data, whilst promoting our rights to free speech.

Technology to combat crime, and technology used to assist in crime will also be a central theme of the conference.

Keynote Speakers

Prof David Wall

Professor of Criminal Justice and Information Technology and Director, Centre for Criminal Justice Studies at the University of Leeds. David's interests include Criminal Justice, Cybercrime, Law and popular culture, Legal Regulation of Knowledge, and Cycling (furiously - where possible!). David's recent book Cybercrime: The transformation of crime in the information age illustrates his main research findings to cyberscams, theft of electronic services, policing and regulating the Internet, and ICT issues post 9-11.

 

David Flint

Partner in MacRoberts' Technology Media & Communications Group and an independent expert under the UK Domain Dispute Resolution Procedure. David has advised extensively on the subject of IP and technology matters. He is a member of the CBI Competition Panel and the Joint Working Party on Competition Law of the UK Law Societies and Bars.

 

Technology Sandpit Event

During the conference, various interactive displays and demonstrations of technology in legal education and practice will be showcased.  Podcasting, Digital Signatures, Virtual Learning Environments and more will be available to play with!  Any further suggestions are welcome.

Open Access Panel

The ‘Open Access to Legal Information’ session will comprise a panel, each member of which will discuss an element of open access and legal education, followed by an open discussion in which the audience is encouraged to participate.  The panel will offer a broad introduction to the concept of open access in the legal context, and will address the special issues associated with operating an open access, online journal, open access and the new environment of demonstrating academic impact, and the need and possibilities for online journal networking.

Submissions

Proposals are still welcome for abstracts and expressions of interest to convene a stream in any of the following areas:

  • Social networking
  • Web 2.0 & Law 2.0
  • Criminal Justice
  • Technology & Crime
  • Privacy and data protection
  • Legal Education
  • Copyright and IPR

There will be a prize-winning competition for the best Postgraduate Student Paper presented at the conference.

Full papers accepted and presented at the conference will be put forward for peer-review or special editions of journals in the areas of law, technology and education.

Email abstracts of approx 500 words in MS Word or PDF to m.bromby@gcal.ac.uk before 15 Feb 2008.  Early submissions and suggestions for streams (including convenors) are welcome. Accepted papers are listed here.
