Name of Creator: Critique.
Biographical/Administrative history: Critique: Journal of Socialist Theory was launched in May 1973 and has been edited since then by Hillel Ticktin. Hillel Ticktin who spent his early years in South Africa has worked as an academic since the 1960s in Glasgow University, becoming Professor of Marxist Studies in 2000. Professor Ticktin retired from Glasgow University two years later as Emeritus Professor but continues in his role as editor of Critique.
Over the years Critique has published a truly eclectic variety of articles ranging from Professor Ticktin’s own long running series on the nature of and prospects for the USSR to one off pieces on the 1984-85 UK miners’ strike and an analysis of Mikhail Bulgakov’s surreal novel The Master and Margarita. Critique has also intermittently produced single issue editions on specific topics or individuals such as the volumes on Victor Serge (Number 24 The Ideas of Victor Serge edited by Susan Weissman) and South Africa (Numbers 28-29 The Politics of Race by Hillel Ticktin).
In September 2003 professor Ticktin deposited 12 linear meters of items associated with Critique. This material included an almost complete run of Critique itself, a number of books and journals in a range of languages and a selection of papers, correspondence and draft copies of articles later published in Critique.
