The overall
Archive is presently split between the
National Archives Scotland
(NAS) and
Glasgow Caledonian University Archives (GCU). NAS is an
agency of the Scottish Executive and houses the governmental
archives of Scotland, as well as archives of Scottish families,
landed estates, churches, businesses and other corporate bodies. GCU
Archives, part of
Research Collections at GCU, hold numerous deposited collections which cover a range of
topics including Scottish left wing
politics and pressure groups and social work and social services in
Scotland, in addition to their own GCU Institutional Archive. NAS
was the initial repository for CHILDREN 1st material. The first
deposit came to GCU in 1995 and several smaller deposits followed.
NAS holds the majority of material originating from
the CHILDREN 1st head office, as well as its Edinburgh branch and
additional branches throughout Scotland, while GCU’s collection
primarily relates to the organisation's activities in Glasgow and
the surrounding areas. Both NAS and GCU hold published materials of
the organisation, such as annual reports and City Sparrows
(magazine of the Scottish Children’s League of Pity) as well as
legislative acts and published reports on matters affecting
children.
Further details about the specific archive holdings are available
through the NAS and GCU links on this site. A detailed history has also been
provided as well as suggested research areas, additional
resources and oral testament. This portal, used as a research tool, has the
potential to open many doors and to allow a detailed research plan
to be realised.
The Nuffield Foundation generously provided funds
allowing this project to come to fruition. The site will be further maintained by GCU's University Archivist.
