Mentoring Programme

Mentoring Programme

AdviceIn this increasingly competitive employment market there is no substitute for one-to-one advice from people who have been professionally successful.
All students on the Peer Assisted Student Support (PASS) programme from September 2010 will receive an alumni industry mentor as part of the PASS programme. Mentors are also available for non PASS students and recent graduates via the Careers Service.

Become a mentor

All our Alumni Mentors are volunteers, the programme gives them the opportunity to use their experience to provide the next generation of Caledonian graduates with practical advice about breaking into a particular field, as well as assisting them with the transition from student to employee or entrepreneur. Our mentors have enjoyed the interaction with mentees, seeing them grow in confidence and self esteem as well as the opportunity to network with other mentors. Register here Mentor Registration Form

Getting a mentor

If you are a current student or graduated in the last two years and would like an industry mentor please contact a Careers Advisor for a consultation and referral to the programme. Students on the PASS programme will automatically receive a mentor as part of their training and support.

The Alumni Mentoring Programme

The programme matches alumni with a student or graduate for up to 12 months. During that time we would expect six contacts between you, including at least one face-to-face meeting, for example, a networking event hosted by the university or 1-2-1 meeting to discuss interview techniques. Other contacts may be via email, telephone or post. The university supplies training materials, telephone and online support as well as at least two networking events during the year. Mentees are encouraged to complete a Learning Contract with their mentor which simply outlines what you both hope to get out of the relationship. We also ask for feedback at the end of the year which helps inform how the programme can be improved.

Advice on how to help your mentee

  • Gain a sense of their career goals
  • Share with them the realities of your profession to give them an insight into the field
  • Explore their motivation for their chosen field, encouraging them to gain exposure to a professional environment through volunteer work, internships and shadowing
  • Help them develop work skills and accomplish specific goals
  • Suggest they access additional resources such as subscribing to industry magazines or attending industry fairs/lectures
  • Only advise within your personal experience and be honest with your mentee

As well as providing them with valuable career advice, this project will help build employment skills such as CV writing and interview techniques. If advice is sought outside your specialist area you should refer the mentee back to the GCU Alumni Relations Officer. We also appreciate that you are volunteering your support and if your circumstances change and you are no longer able to participate in the programme at any time simply let us know and we can allocate your mentee to another mentor on the programme.
