Magnus Magnusson Fund
"Our father was thrilled and touched when, near the end of his life, the University mooted a scholarship and fellowship in his name. We, his children, are delighted that his life-long encouragement of individual excellence will be reflected in the scholarship and his myriad intellectual passions celebrated in the fellowship" - Sally, Margaret, Anna, Jon Magnusson
This is the moment to support a very special fund in honour of the late Magnus Magnusson.
As a writer, thinker, historian, journalist, television presenter, family man and much more, Magnus Magnusson touched the lives of so many and represented in an exemplary way the ‘lad ‘o’ pairts’. He was perhaps Iceland’s most famous ambassador, whose love of the country of his birth and the country where he grew up was evident in everything that he did. His interests were wide, his thirst for knowledge was never ceasing.
Prior to his sad death in early 2007, Magnus Magnusson and the Principal of Glasgow Caledonian University had discussed establishing a new scholarship Award Scheme. We believe that a suitable memorial to a unique individual would be the Magnus Magnusson Fund, and indeed this has been reflected in both the flourishing [Magnus Magnusson student award scheme] , and the outstandingly successful Magnus Magnusson Fellowship - a small invited group of international leaders - met at Glasgow Caledonian University in December 2008 to discuss the role of education in the alleviation of poverty. The inaugural lecture was given by Nobel prizewinner Professor Muhammad Yunus. The first group of Fellows included the philanthropist and entrepreneur Sir Tom Hunter, Dr William Storrar, director of the Center of Theological Inquiry in Princeton, New Jersey, and Palestinian lawyer and writer, a founder of the pioneering human rights organisation Al-Haq, Raja Shehadeh.
These events could not have been made possible without generous contributions from individuals and organisations, and we hope that potential donors who continue to give to the fund will help us to help more young people for their dreams into the future.
