Academic Development

The Academic Development team supports professional development for innovative learning and teaching across the University, in collaboration with colleagues in the Academic Schools, the Library and Professional Services.

Our aim is to support staff to develop the confidence and capability to design and deliver an engaging, student-centred, learning and teaching experience. This is achieved through the provision of accredited and non-accredited academic development opportunities in both blended and online mode, support for gaining professional recognition in an appropriate category of Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (HEA), and guidance on curriculum design for new programmes.

The team works at a strategic level cross GCU to support the implementation of the Strategy for Learning in priority areas of development such as digital learning and the Common Good curriculum. We also develop policy and guidance where needed to support and enhance the learning and teaching experience for staff and students.

Digital learning is core to our activities. We lead and support strategic developments in the development of both blended and fully online programmes, open education and learning analytics and the digital capabilities of GCU staff. We also oversee the core learning technologies , including the University’s virtual learning environment GCULearn, to make sure they continue to meet the needs of staff and students.

Academic Development support the design and development of curriculum design in line with GCU procedures for programme approval and review.  Useful resources include:
